A Voice Against Israeli Apartheid: An evening with Palestinian Activist Issa Amro

Internationally renowned Palestinian human rights defender Issa Amro will speak about nonviolent activism in the West Bank city of Hebron. Hebron is segregated by a harsh military repression, and is where the most ideological and vicious Israeli settlers reside. Issa will talk about his work as the coordinator of Youth Against Settlements (YAS), a Hebron based organization that documents human rights abuses and encourage the local families to resist nonviolently and remain steadfastly in their homes. despite attempts to push them out. He will outline YAS's annual Open Shuhada Street campaign and their new Families Freedom of Movement campaign to end the closed military zone restrictions that have placed a stranglehold on Hebron families since November 2015. Issa will connect his direct work on the ground in Hebron with the need for the international community to engage in campaigns to hold companies responsible for doing business in the settlements. 

In 2009 Issa won the One World media award for his involvement in B’Tselem’s “Shooting Back” project. In 2010 he became the OHCHR human rights defender of the year in Palestine and in 2013 he was declared a Human Right Defender by the European Union. He is recognized by many in Palestine as a real hero.
